Programs (Educators)

Inclusion is about community, about membership, about relationships, and about development. The goal of the classroom programs at the Experimental Education Unit is to provide educational experience to children with diverse abilities in a setting that enhances the strengths and supports the needs of all children in our program; and provides children with opportunities to build memberships, establish relationships, and develop functional skills.

All EEU programs promote the development of children's cognitive, motor, communication, and social interaction skills by means of educational and therapeutic interventions most appropriate for each child. These programs always include typically developing children and children with various developmental delays or disabilities. All classrooms are managed by interdisciplinary teams including the head teacher, assistant teacher, speech and language pathologist, occupational or physical therapist, social worker, nurse, and other appropriate staff. Specific programs are the following:

Infant and Toddler: A home-based program serves infants (6 weeks to 24 months) and their families; a center-based program serves toddlers (18 months to 3 years).

Click here for more information about the Infant Toddler Program

Preschool: Half-day programs serve children 3 to 5 years old.

Kindergarten/Primary: This program emphasizes the development of cognitive, social, and motor skills that enable children to successfully transition to regular classrooms the following year.

ECEAP: This program, which includes all team services and parent support, provides training for Head Start/Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program staff. A particular training focus is serving children (primarily 4 year olds) with moderate and severe disabilities in a Head Start context.

EEU Family Programs

Parents and other family members have access to support services, such as counseling and training in how to supplement their children's education in the home. There is also a parent support and education network, a monthly meeting which provides speakers and a support network for all parents. The Infant/Toddler program has a program specifically for fathers.

EEU Parent Support and Education Network

The network is a group of parents who have been meeting monthly with the intention of carrying on meaningful and satisfying conversations about what it's like to be a parent of a young child. The group is supportive not only of the commonality that EEU parents bring to the meeting, but also of the diversity and uniqueness that is always present. The evening is split into two sessions. The first part is a discussion around a particular topic chosen by families and the second part is a socializing/support time. Childcare is provided. Flyers will be sent home informing parents of the meeting times and locations as they are scheduled. All EEU parents are warmly invited to attend.

EEU Father's Evening

This is a time for Dad's to come and "PLAY"! Since many Dads are not able to come to the morning sessions, this time was designed to "show off" what their children have been learning at the playgroups and to answer any questions that might need to be addressed. In addition, it is a time to participate in a support group with other fathers. During this portion of the evening, free child care is offered by professionals that interact with your child in play group. These evenings are offered once a month and are now offered to all of the dads with children enrolled in the Infant Toddler Program.

Parent Volunteers

If you would like to volunteer to assist in your child's classroom on a regular basis, your child's teacher will be happy to hear from you. Also, if you would prefer to assist in a classroom other than your child's, please call Jennifer Annable (543-4011) to make arrangements.
